I recently bought a Mitchell 300. I know most of you use one every weekend, so maybe somebody can tell me how to fix this one. I got it at a yard sale, and I knew that the bail wouldn't throw, but I figured I could fix it. After all, I have been using them for years and I always do my own upkeep and repairs.
But I got a nasty surprise. This was the newer model Mitchell 300. It is made of hard plastic instead of the traditional metal and I noticed that the name "Garcia" is no longer on it. It seems to work and feel the same and the quality is still good, but the bail return mechanism is completely enclosed and I can't figure out how it works. I removed a little cover and turned the crank, but nothing in there moved. The bail didn't move either. There is almost no sign of wear and I don't think it has been used very much.
With the old models, when the bail failed to throw, I just took out that big chrome screw and put in a new bail return spring and it was ready to go for several more years. What is wrong with this cotton-pickin' thing and how do I fix it? Howard
