Monster Arena: qualifying round

I've lost every single preliminary round, and am up against someone who has won 2 rounds and lost 5, in the qualifying round. However, when looking at the numerical statistics, my characters seem to be better than his. How has he managed to win 2 more rounds than me? Pure luck, or am I simply crap in this game?
