Unfortunately, one week in 1987 we went on a family vacation and for some reason the C64 was left on the floor of the garage. Anyway, on Wednesday (I think it was) there was a huge downpour and everybody's house in Montreal got flooded. Some people found their pianos floating in the basement.
I remember that night well, because we were watching the MLB All-Star Game, and Tim Raines (then of the Expos) tripled in extra innings to drive in two and win for the NL. Right after the game, we had to drive home from Toronto and assess the damage. We had only a foot of water in the basement and garage, but it was enough to drown our poor C64.
My dad dried it out, and it worked for a few years, but the "A" key was very stubborn. That's a pain when you have to "LOAD" all your floppy-based games.
Sadly, it died a few years later. We would turn it on and all we saw on the little TV was a blue screen.
Little did we know that we had in our possession an early Nintendo.
I miss my C64 :(
