I'll happily sit on either a sofa or a couch, though somehow a sofa sounds more like what someone might have in their "forbidden room" (you know the one, fully furnished living room that still has the original vacuum marks on the carpet) and a couch sounds more like what you'd sprawl on to watch TV in a comfortable den.
As for the soda/pop thing, I don't hear either term very often, but maybe that's because the main language here is French. We call them "soft drinks".
Please don't call all soft drinks "Coke". The Coca-Cola Co. paid mind-blowing sums of money on their trade-mark, and that trade-mark dies a little every time somebody calls anything other than a Coca-Cola soft drink a "Coke".
