You do keep the money from the previous fight, and the money you gain from a fight is added to what you already have. The money always carries over.

That's debatable, and I'm not sure if you want my opinion on that. If you save most of your money through the first (placement) round of the tournament, then you can really surprise the first player you go up against in the first round of the elimination tournament. Also, some of the better weapons and armors give better bonuses for the money, and you can thereby increase the enchantments to higher levels for single fights.

You will earn less money in the first round if you lose most of the time, however, so it might be worthwhile to improve equipment over time to get more gold to work with for the elimination tournament. That said, I think that it is better to save money for bigger items overall, if it is a choice between losing some fights or saving money. The monetary difference between winning and losing does not seem to be enough to make it worth spending the money to always win, especially if you are going to be somewhere in the middle of the pack for placement anyway.

Or, you could create ten accounts with different strategies until you find exactly the right balance, giving your new accounts clever names like "hindsight".

Or, if you are less clever, "monkey20xd6". Just kidding monkey.
