GOA - I think I may have screwed myself (spoilers)

Alright, so this is my inventory:

18 Bronze Coins
Guard's Sword
Torch
Clear Focus Stone

9 Red Gemstones
Stone of Strengthening
Wire Clippers
Piece of Trash

1 Black Gemstone
Food Rations
Key of Opening
Blanket

6 Apples
Tinderbox
Portrait
Map

Now, I have two problems. I am in Llagimlyn, and can neither get the painting from the castle nor the hammer. In regards the painting, I've tried to climb in the window, and only gotten beaned with a glass bowl for my troubles.

But I think my bigger problem is that I went into the abandoned shack, and went down to the basement before getting the hammer. In getting out, I lost my crate, which I've gathered is important for getting the hammer. I can't get the crate back...so what can I do now?

Any help is appreciated ;)
