Getting there is half the fun

I have flown to Hawaii twelve times. I didn't make that up. I really have. But sometimes I have looked down from the airplane at the Pacific Ocean and wonder if I was missing something. I think I am about to find out. My wife is looking at cruises again and this time it's a cruise-to-Hawaii-and-fly-back deal. Nothing is set in stone yet and I haven't even looked at an itinerary, but I know those islands well and look forward to arriving at each one by a new means.
The only major island we haven't visited is Lanai and I hope for a stop there.

Two smaller islands are no longer on the kapu list and maybe we will see one or both of those. They are Niihau (ne e how), which was until recently restricted to only native Hawaiians, and Kahoolawe (Cah who oh la we) which was used for target practice by the Navy. Both are being opened up to visitors on a very limited basis.

Niihau is one of the older islands up near Kauai. It is basically two peaks with broad low areas. One peak is about 1000 feet high. It has picture-postcard beaches.

Kahoolawe is a jungle covered, mountainous island near Maui.

And no, I'm not afraid of a few unexploded shells. I spent a lot of time in old artillery impact areas in Oklahoma back in the 50's. A little common sense goes a long way in such places. They are removing a lot of old bombs and shells from Kahoolawe, but they will never get them all.
