The main street in Greenfield is all angular parking spaces, and half the people in this town drive SUVs or extra-long vans. So you get to pull blindly out into traffic and hope the people zooming down the street are watching the road and not chatting on the phone or putting on makeup.
I have developed a proceedure for getting out of those places. It isn't fool proof, but your chance of survival is improved.
I turn on the four-way flashers and back slowly out until the lights are visible to any driver who might be passing by. I come to a brief stop and then continue out verrrrrry slowly. If someone is coming, there are four things that are likely to happen: 1. They will blow their horn or screech their tires to make it look like they almost hit you. 2. They will swerve into another lane while blowing their horn like crazy and charge by as close as possible, but without hitting you. 3. They will stop and let you out, usually because they want your space. Or, 4. They will stop close enough to prevent you from backing out and wait for you to pull back in so they can continue. I have never pulled back in nor have I ever failed to wait them out. A few will finally back up, but most will pull out and go around while gestering. Howard
The bottom line is that you are less likely to be hit and if you are you can always say I wasn't moving and this idiot ignored my emergency lights. OK, maybe I was moving a little bit, but can they prove it? How"100%, so far"ard
