I was very pleased to see Cold Mountain, Minghella, and Kidman not nominated. I thought the movie was poor, and Kidman gave a terrible performance (complete with one of the least convincing accents I've ever heard in a movie). I'm amazed that you had the guts to pull Cold Mountain from your list; I'd heard that the screeners loved the movie, and besides, Never Bet Against Miramax, right?

Man, the pundits were SO wrong this year. Few people gave Shohleh Aghdashloo a real shot; most people thought Keisha Castle-Hughes was being inappropriately pushed for Supporting, hence would miss out on Lead; Samantha Morton wasn't given good odds. And the directing nod for City of God is just completely out of the blue. I only got 21 out of 30 correct in the big six categories, one of my worst years ever -- and the thing is, I felt very confident in most of my picks.

Another oddity: not a single Holocaust movie in either Documentary category. Lots of Vietnam stuff instead.

The Makeup and Visual Effects categories should be called "Best Movie With a Colon" -- The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King; Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World; Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Sheesh.

Happy to see Seabiscuit doing well, though I'd hoped for a surprise Chris Cooper supporting nom. I was a little surprised that Big Fish only got a Score nom -- no Albert Finney, or Cinematography, or possibly a few others? (Speaking of Score, I noticed that Randy Newman didn't get a nom for Seabiscuit. Figures ... one of the few scores of his I liked, and it didn't get chosen.)

Another thing that really strikes me is the number of acting nominees not from America. I count 1 in Supporting Actress (Aghdashloo); 4 in Actress (all but Keaton); 3 in Supporting Actor (Del Toro, Hounsou, Watanabe); and 2 in Actor (Kingsley, Law). That's half the nominees.

Well, now for the easy part. The acting awards were correctly predicted by the Globes, and most of the technicals will go to LotR, so many pools will be decided by things like Documentary Short.
