Within Word, there's an easier way than going to the Character Map. Just go up to Insert and then choose Symbol. Then select the character you want and choose insert.

If you go to Insert and don't see the Symbol option, just click on the double arrows at the bottom of the Insert menu. The menu will expand and you'll be able to choose Symbol.
