Have you ever tried to write an index? It ain't easy. One of the scooter magazines that I take runs a technical article in each issue. They are very helpful if you are doing repair or restoration on an old scooter. I had to go through a dozen magazines before I found one on wheel bearings, so I thought, "Why not an index?"
The magazine comes out six times a year, so going back to about 1994 means I had to go through 54 back issues and check the index, then read or at least skim the article. Then I went to Microsoft Word and started a list with entries like "Engine, OMC, valves. . ." followed by the volume and number of the issue. In most cases I listed the page. Fortunately, the word processing program puts it all in alphabetical order. It is two pages long, because some articles covered more than one subject. I also listed some things more than once. That way if I try to find it under Valves, or OMC instead of Engine, I can still find it.
It took a while, but now I can find the info I need quickly without having to drop everything and search through a stack of magazines.
I wish I had had time to organize stuff when I was teaching, but I never got caught up enough to do it. Howard
