snow

Our predicted snow today will likely be rain. We've seen a few stray flakes falling on warm ground a couple of times this year, and yesterday while crossing the Cumberland Plateau, we saw a skim on the ground in shady places. But that's a 1000 feet higher than here at home. Some years a skim or two is all we get. Most years, a total of a few inches is normal. But some years, maybe one out of 20, it looks like New England has moved to Tennessee. In the 32 years we have been in this house, I saw 24 below zero once, and up to 18 inches of snow maybe twice. Once it snowed when we had strong winds and we had drifts two or three feet deep in the yard. Other places were swept clear, so I guess the average was a foot or so. But lots of years you can't scrap up enough for a good snowball.

I used to hope for snow, but the kids are grown and even the grandkids are growing up. (We have a granddaughter who turned 18 recently.) I guess I won't miss it if we never get a flake. If we get a big one, I'll sit in front of the fake fireplace and look at the woods all day. I might go out long enough to put a few hickory nuts out on the deck for our little nutty friends, but that's about it.

And they tell me winter won't be here until next week.
