"Thing"? You mean the wraith, right? He's the easy one of the two you face. All you have to do is fake him out - try a different combination of moves. If you lunge all the time, he'll just keep blocking.

If you mean the dragon... OY. He's a pain, but you must get past him and talk to a certain wise man as much as possible. Just keep trying stuff on the dragon. Take note of different "states" of the battle and then try something you haven't tried before.

That is as specific as I can possibly be. I don't think anyone can give you the exact steps to defeating the cave dragon.
