Whoa. I'm replying to a movie thread.
> Elf, which debuted two weekends ago and dropped only 18% at the box office last weekend, looks to be a financial hit for New Line and as much of a surprise as School of Rock. How can Elf not be a stupid, shallow little thing? But apparently it isn't.
Elf got amazingly good reviews in our local paper. Three and a half stars, I think -- mind-boggling. Come of think of it, School of Rock got three stars, which surprises me less because I think Jack Black is hysterical.
> Dec 2 - The Land Before Time X (direct-to-video) > > This series is the most hilarious series I've never seen. Well, I did see the first one. I wouldn't have thought, in a million years, that it would spawn nine sequels.
When I saw the first movie in third grade, I never would have thought that they'd still be making these movies by the time my sister was my age. Thankfully she's outgrown them, and none too soon: I was starting to root for extinction. I hate those dinosaurs.
> Dec 5 - The Last Samurai > > I've seen this trailer too many times in the theater. But it looks good. Like Master & Commander, it seems to be a return to some old-fashioned adventure storytelling. The modern-day emphasis on visuals remains, but special effects do not dominate. I flip-flop on Tom Cruise a lot, but this looks good. It also stands a chance at the Oscars, but that's still up in the air.
Really? I thought so little of the trailer that I have a bet going with a friend of mine that this movie's going to reek. I can't put my finger on exactly why, but it seems like it's going to be a case of the whole being less than the sum of its parts.

[music geek] Tori Amos plays a wedding singer in the film, so I'm going to end up seeing it and buying the soundtrack just for that. [/music geek]
> Dec 25 - Young Black Stallion > > This IMAX movie looks gorgeous. I would doubt the story is more than competent, but the trailer seems like it will make a beautiful theatrical experience. I've never seen an IMAX movie, and this, especially considering who I'm married to, may well be my first.
You WHAT? You've NEVER SEEN AN IMAX MOVIE? How can you LIVE with yourself? And I thought you were a film aficionado.

YES YES YES YES YAY I CAN'T WAIT.
