Can you run that by me again? I am easily confused sometimes.

Florida's geography is not unique, but it is interesting. Along the coastline, you find long narrow islands called "barrier islands." Wind and surf can build those up in a few thousand years. One hurricane can wipe them out, but they usually come back. The Florida Keys, which extend from Key Largo to Key West (Or maybe even further west.)are built on a solid limestone foundation that was once an ancient reef. They can be pounded and damaged by storms, but the limestone isn't going anywhere.

Some islands along the perimeter of the peninsula are sometimes called "Keys" but they are not usually formed in the same way as those at the tip of the peninsula. Keys is sometimes spelled Cays, but most old crackers pronounce them the same way. It's about halfway between the way I say key and cay.

You also find a lot of small islands throughout the Caribbean and the Bahamas that are called Keys or Cays.
