Generally, whenever I play something competitively (which I don't do very often, and generally only because a friend of mine is playing and doesn't want to go alone), I will place one below the lowest place that carries a prize. I placed a consistent third in the tournament series we had awhile back in my hometown that offered prizes for the top two finishers.

Eventually I broke out of that pattern and started winning consistently, which I soon became bored with. So I don't compete anymore.
