Not sure what you're talking about regarding level 1. . . . Last I checked everything was accessible.Maybe you should double check the map you made (I made a mistake when I first mapped out level 4, so I know what I'm saying here). Are you casting any light spells as you go (there should at least be CANDLE available to you); I'm assuming that you don't have any of the high level spells yet. Also keep in mind that the dungeon levels tend to warp around, so that if you're at the south end of a level, say, then you should be able to see some of the north end.
And level 1 is sort of two separate areas - - one is for a little levelling up, and the other is for progressing in the game.
And the empty stone? View your character. Click "Examine inventory". Read description. Most of the time, that will answer questions about what some object does. But I believe there was an answer some time ago about an empty stone being junk/useless.
