On closer examination of our cruise itinerary, I found that we are going to Puntarenas, a town in a Costa Rican province also called Puntarenas. I know punta means a point of land or peninsula, but I don't know what the renas part means. But that's not the point of this post.
The itinerary lists the stop as "Puntarenas (Caldera), Costa Rica." As any old retired earth science teacher should know,a caldera is a collapsed volcanic cone. They are often filled with water. In several locations, caldera near shore lines have formed natural harbors. The map of Puntrenas Province shows no mention of a volcano or a caldera, although Costa Rica has plenty of volcanic structures in other provinces.
So finally, my question is this: Does anybody have any first-hand knowledge of Costa Rica? Would a cruise ship make a stop there so that tourist types can see a caldera? Is there a caldera at Puntarenas?
One suspicion is that the harbor around Puntarenas is a caldera. And then it might just be a typo on the itinerary. Howard
