The volunteer was drawn from people who responded to TV adverts to take part in this. There was then extensive screening to find someone that Brown could read perfectly. I don't imagine that a plant was needed, but I also don't doubt that there was absolutly zero chance of it going wrong. After all, not even Channel 4 would broadcast his accidental suicide.
Which makes me think that the whole thing is completely pointless - I don't know what the fix is (and it seems that my guess about the bullet not actually being in the gun was wrong), but I think that showing how it was done would have been more interesting.
