I have had difficulty getting a license in California. My vision is not perfect even with contacts or glasses. Right now, my vision is about 20/40 on a good day (good meaning my eyes are focusing well). My eyes are quite weird and they twitch back and forth when I stare at something, such as the eye charts.

Well, when I went to get a license a few years back, they asked me to get my opthamologist to fill out a form stating how bad my vision is and if he'd reccomend me driving. The doc said that I'd be okay to drive and said I should only have to renew my license every 4 years without restrictions (like no night driving).

When I actually got to the DMV, I failed the eye test because I can't read the chart with one eye only. So, the brilliant minds of the DMV instructed me to put my face in this bizarre machine and read more lines, which I obviously failed as well. They marked my vision down as 20/100 in both eyes and 20/200 in my left eye. Absolutely wonderful.

After waiting for the girl at the desk to discuss this issue with her supervisor, they decide to allow me a license for 2 years. I said fine and left.

Six months later, I find out that I need to go back to retake my test because my two years are almost up. The DMV dates years by your birthday and by when you got your permit. Since my permit was from July of the year before, that's when they began counting. July to September (my birthday) then September to the following September, even though I had only gotten my license in March. They retested me and so now I have another 2 years before I need to take it yet AGAIN.
