Consistency is a restriction of the left side of the brain. Dreaming is primarily right-brained. Call dreaming the ultimate form of "free writing," where your mind is essentially thinking "the first thing that comes to mind" and turning it into an experience. With our rational selves conveniently dormant, there's nothing to check that imagination and invalidate its fruits on such trifling grounds.
