They remind me more of tabloids over in the U.S., and most of the people in my group seem to agree. They always seem to have these tacky headlines onto their articles, and it seems like each day they have women in revealing clothes. It just seems like the reporting over here is a lot different than in the U.S. (although I heard the Guardian is better than most newspapers, although I have yet to pick one up). Just a random observation > > Mar 'Seen about 5 out of 10 planned plays. So far....' vin
Oh, absolutely. I'm not a great fan of any of our tabloids, with their relentless prying into celebrities' private lives and mindless infatuation with whatever is going on at the moment in soaps. The Sun is the most widely-read British newspaper (I don't know its circulation, but it is enormous) and it makes a point of having a topless girl on Page 3 every single day. It's blatant pornography, and the rest of the reporting (such as I know, being someone who wouldn't go within five miles of The Sun unless I had to) is mainly sex-driven. By the way, lawyers, that's my personal opinion, and this website does not endorse my views, OK?
The Daily Mail is another newspaper that is generally slated by the satirical media while having a good circulation. Its stance is normally vehemently anti-European (and it's been carrying anti-American sentiment recently, too) and is noted for being exceptionally unkind towards immigrants. Basically, I'm not impressed, and neither is a good proportion of the public.
The Guardian (or the Grauniad, as it's more often called, due to its history of typos) is one of the broadsheets, the group of papers which are normally seen as being of rather better quality. The Times, The Daily Telegraph and The Independent (I think) are others in this group, and they are generally better in terms of content, although they also have political slants; The Times and the Telegraph are pretty Conservative, usually, while the Guardian is more left-wing. It has been attacked for this on newsgroups recently (at least, the right-wing dominated newsgroups I've seen) and branded Communist and leftie. Still, there you go, I suppose...you can't escape the inevitable morons attacking newspapers for printing their opinions.
Anyway, that's a very narrow overview of British newspapers. They can have quite good reporting, but any copy of Private Eye will show up the huge amount of selective reporting, sycophancy and all-round inaccuracy of quite a lot of it.
