Bananas

During a break, I was sitting on a bench, eating a banana and reading a book. A Blue Jay (more likely a scrub jay) flew up and perched on an ashtray, no more than two feet away from me. It made no noise but looked at me for a bit. I wondered if I was roosting near it's nest or something. So I tossed it a bit of banana since that was all the food I had. I'm not sure if it knew what the banana was but since it didn't immediately gobble it up, I figured that bananas were either a new food or one that isn't liked too much. It "nibbled" a bit at the piece and scampered away to the other side of the bench when someone walked by. After sitting there, watching me, apparently waiting to see if I had anything better, it flew away.
I've never seen a Jay do this. They are fairly bold but I don't recall them expecting a human to have food. We do have a lot of ducks on the campus and they are fairly used to us walking around. We're not supposed to feed them but people do anyway.
