I keep saying, "What next?" First it was the exploding truck tire. Then the plastic bucket stuck under the car. Then came the near head-on collision, and the Mini-Cooper that came up the ramp and pulled into the fast lane a low speed. And now another chapter about how to almost get killed on the highway.
Today, on the way home from Middle Tennessee, we smelled a strange, but somehow familiar smell. We smelled it for 70 miles, then suddenly, we found out what it was. Diesel fuel. The truck skidded sideways at about 70. I got it under control and slowed to about 50. I turned on the four-ways and pulled off the road. The tires were ok, but there was that diesel smell. (No, our truck runs on gasoline.) Somebody had been spilling diesel fuel for 70 miles in the east bound lane of I-40. I had been riding in the right lane so I tried the left lane and then got sideways again. At 65. Going downhill. Beside a trailer truck. I got under control and eased back to the right. We saw a Honda in the ditch. he had skidded and spun all the way around. Someone had already stopped to help him so we carefully eased off at the next exit and followed old highway 70 home. I expect to see something in tomorrow's paper about a rash of wrecks on I-40. What next? Maybe I should fly more. Howard
