I would think this case--with a totaled car, an injured party, and a fatality--would definitely get the "fine tooth comb" treatment by an insurance company, and be well worth, to them, the expense of a private investigator.

Bang on. Ten points for koalamom!

The insurance company for the young man (whose name is apparently "Dwight", not "Dwayne" as the EMS and I had thought at the time) has hired the PI to do a full investigation. Apparently, Dwight is still in hospital, and a paraplegic (although I'm not sure if that's a permanent thing, or a compressed spine with physiotherapy treatments intended to get him on his feet again). We started by me giving as detailed a statement as I could, all recorded on tape, and then we did some questions and answers, also recorded. A lot of the questions were specific things about the nature of the accident itself (not much help I could be there, since I didn't see much) and my own credibility (Had I been drinking at the time? Do I wear eyeglasses? Was I wearing them at the time?). The next step is that the PI types up our conversation, then we meet again for me to look over it, approve of it, make any changes I feel necessary, and sign it.
