We have three cherry trees growing at the end of our garden. They are very close to the road and when the cherries are ripe, neighbors often stop by to sample a few. In the spring, about the same time as the dogwood, the cherry trees suddenly burst out in a profusion of white blooms. Then a frost or hard freeze. . . . Well that only happens about every other year.

This year was a good year for cherries. We had a 28 degree morning while they were in bloom, but the wind was blowing, and that somehow saved the blooms. Then this past weekend the cherries started turning red and we realized that there were millions of them. (Maybe not an exaggeration.) Friends and neighbors came running and picked them by the gallon. We even backed the truck up under the trees so we could reach some of the higher branches and picked a few gallons ourself. Grandson Chris was here and helped.

Willette has a cherry sauce that she makes and we use it on toast, bisquits, or ice cream. I've even been known to plop a few ripe cherries in my Cherrios.

There are still plenty left on the trees for the birds.
