Hey, Calvin, did you see that? He called you sir! Don't you just hate when they do that? Kidding of course. Sometime it makes me feel old, but I know it's just a sign that they were brought up right. I have friends and neighbors who still call me "Mister" because 30 or 40 years ago they were in my class. I guess they just aren't comfortable with "Howard."

Once when I was still in my first year as a teacher, my father came to visit. It was his first time in this town so we went down on Broadway and walked around. Some kid went by and said "Hi, Mr. Murrill." My father turned around, really surprised that someone in a strange town knew him. It happened a couple of more times before he got used to the fact that there was another "Mister" in the family.
