You've gotten to the Sphinx and you have the sword, which means you must know how to get out of the forest. (I mean, you had to have left the forest to fetch your sword after slaying the wood sprite...) Is it a matter of not remembering where the gate is, or not knowing what to do about the Sphinx?

If it's the latter, try just walking past the Sphinx. He's not hungry today.
