That was one clue. The other was the male designation; there are, as yet, no female Cardinals. Not sanctioned by the orthodox Roman Catholic Church, in any case.

The Cardinals were not just bickering in my imagination, however; they were out-and-out fighting. That kind of fighting isn't good for Cardinals or cardinals.
