When I was new, there were several times I nearly left because I percieved elitism in Chat, but now I'm not so sure that that elitism exists -- people just prefer to talk to people they already know, when they're available.

That doesn't mean that conversations can't be spread out over the two main rooms, or additional public rooms, and sometimes that happens, if a group of people want to discuss one particular subject that no one else cares about. But usually, I think people prefer to stay in one room because they don't want to leave some of their other friends in another room.
