> I have to agree with wm here. Everyone likes to bash "Enemy of the State" for that scene, but who cares? The movie assumes there is magic technology and uses it as the setup for a wicked-cool action/suspense flick. It's not believable, but that's fine by me.
Something that sloppy I have a hard time setting aside. I can't help but think that if they're going the "magic technology" route, they may as well go all the way and have Dr. Claw magic monitors that allow them to watch whetever they want wherever they want. Or, for crying out loud, just have the camera pointing the right way to begin with. There's no reason it *needed* to be a view of the wrong side of the bag - it built up two seconds of suspense before they flipped it around. Whee.
Not that I'm saying the movie is bad *because* of that scene. No movie is bad because of one scene. Just that that was where it started to lose me, and it never got me back. I kept thinking, if these guys have technology that good, there is no way the Smith character could possibly not be found. No way at all. Like you said, it's unbelievable. And when I can't believe the mechanics of a suspense flick, I no longer find it suspenseful - the screenplay is cheating, and the characters are just being jerked around aimlessly.
> And, while the movie is nowhere near the equal of "The Conversation," it's very cool to see Hackman essentially reprising that role. I also like Will Smith, despite the fact that he picks a lot of bad roles. He's a very talented actor and just oozes charisma. I haven't seen "Bad Boys" but the trailer for BB2 is hilarious. I may have to see it.
Gene Hackman RULES, and I agree that he 0wn3d this film. I loved every second of his performance. Will Smith I've yet to see in anything good, so I'll refrain from judging him. Most of the parts he plays tend to have exactly one dimension, and it's almost always "cool."
