The point in telling your wife you love her is that (A) It makes her feel good, and (B) it's concieveable she does *not* know you love her, or at least at that very moment she may not know you're thinking about her.

Let's see if this makes more sense this way:

I'm sure you've had it happen on occasion--friends/coworkers/chatroom are talking about you in the third person, *and you're standing right there*. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's annoying, but it's always oddly impersonal when they don't acknowledge your presence, when *you* are the subject of conversation. You can hear them, and they *know* you can hear them--that's not the issue. The issue is, you've only been included in the conversation as the passive object of discussion, not as an active participant. Well, I imagine it's a little bit like that with God. You're thinking your thoughts about Him, *and He's right there*, but you're not acknowledging His presence. You've relegated Him to a diminished, impersonal role.

Or, going back to the first analogy, Faux Pas mumbles to himself outloud that he loves his wife, then goes about his business. Mrs. Faux Pas, who happens to overhear, thinks, "That's sweet--but it would be even sweeter if he came over here and said it to my face".

If I only talk *about* you, but never *to* you, it's not really much of a relationship, is it?
If I only think about God, but never direct my thoughts to Him personally in prayer, that's not much of a relationship either.
