I have called them once a week ever since, to let them know I'm still very interested and to find out how far along the process is. Each week, I've been told the same thing: "We are working through the applications we received, and will start phoning people about interviews next week if possible."
When I moved from Really Big City to relatively small town, I was also faced with this dilemna. In need of a part time job that didn't require dressing in one of those pull-over shirts with the collar and two buttons (I have my priorities.), it took me quite a while to find a part-time job in the creative field. This, of course, was the one at the brothel.
What you're facing is a large, over-crowded community in a nation with a high (about 6%) unemployment rate. It'll take time, but eventually something will come up.

[insert joke about Dave here]
