The Make-Believe people always frightened me. King Friday was a little spooky, but Lady Elaine and X the Owl really gave me the creeps. To begin with, they had mean-looking faces, and their mouths didn't move when they spoke! And I had this weird idea that the king didn't really have a moustache, but rather it was some sort of strange harmonica-like speech-synthesizing device affixed to his mouth. *shiver* Yeah, that was a little unsettling for me growing up. But maybe that's part of the reason I developed into a Star Trek fan who thinks the Borg are so cool. Come to think of it, I think the king played the harmonica too, so maybe that's part of the reason why I thought he had one attached to his face. I was a strange kid. For that matter, I haven't changed much.

For some reason Daniel the Tiger, the prince, and Corney (the rocking chair guy) didn't freak me out quite as much. I liked them.

Despite the fact that some of the puppets were spooky, Mr. Rogers still ruled. Picture-Picture was one of my favorite parts, and I always hoped Mr. McFeely would bring a new filmstrip to show. (Speedy Delivery!)

I always got excited when Mr. Rogers went into the kitchen, because it wasn't very often that we got to see this room. I guess since the camera was usually in the living room, getting to see another part of the house was almost like going "behind-the-scenes" for me. And then I was like, "WOW, see, Mr. Rogers' house is real after all!" And it was a cool reminder of why the guy was so special. I knew other programs like my beloved Sesame Street were all fake, and I loved a show like Mr. Rogers', so genuine that I couldn't help but relate to it.
