I'm getting the shakes. posted by ZwemGek on Tuesday, February 25, 2003, at 11:28:50:
As a side note, I'm programming my own single-player adventure game in PHP, so no plugins or even JavaScript are necessary -- the whole thing is server-side. It's a little like AGL. But it's nowhere near finished yet, and I don't have much time to work on it. So I'm not advertising it for anyone to play yet, because at the moment it simply wouldn't be much fun.
I'm finding that creating good puzzles is a lot of fun, but also pretty tricky. Does anybody have suggestions I might be able to use? Not specific puzzles, mind you, but basic puzzle structures? Maybe there are some classic adventure game puzzles I could adapt in some way. I'm a big fan of the Monkey Island games, which are giving me a bit of inspiration. I'm new to this kind of design and planning, and I want my game to be as fun and challenging as it can, without being too impossible. Everything needs to be logical and predictable to some extent, but not blatantly obvious to everyone, either. It's a very thin line, as I'm discovering.
Anyone who has experience doing stuff like this, your comments would help me a lot. Thanks in advance!
(Oh, and if you still have the shakes in a year or two, let me know and we'll see if my game is ready.)
