Until you get to around level 1500, where you can kill Murkon in one round even if you only manage to land one hit. After that point extra damage is just for show.

I think that the ideal party (yeah, let's not bother to rigorously define it) would consist of six assassins with 2^31 - 1 HP, 2^31 - 1 SP, 2^31 - 1 WC, 2^31 - 1 AC (i.e., maximum for all of these), and all spells (of course). I'm not sure what items you'd want to throw in...maybe at least one of all the keys? That way the "ideal" party could get between any two points in the dungeon in minimum time. Also, I'm not sure how you'd equip them to get the best combination of attributes (Strength, IQ, etc.).
