I'm glad that I got all the way through this thread to find that someone had clearly identified the heart of the issue: What is free will; how does it work? I'll give this some thought and hopefully have something constructive to add. Meanwhile, kudos to Stephen for shearing through all the immaterial comments and keeping the discussion tightly focused on what's really at issue.
