You need to corner the cat in someplace where you can CLOSE her only means of escape. If she's escaped from you in the kitchen and then where the brat is playing, you'll have your chance to catch her the third time you find her. Just make sure she can't get away first.

As for getting into the mines, have you visited some sick patients in the medical ward yet? One of them in particular will be very helpful, if you can get him in a condition to talk...
