If you want barely-maintained-road fun, next time you pass that way over the Kanc (actually, the next time you are going the *other* way on the Kanc) try going over Bear Notch Road. You end up in Bartlett, somewhere in the vicinity of Attitash (at least that's the closest landmark I think you'd recognize--you'll actually come out right at David's Corner Store in the middle of town, if I remember correctly)
This route probably doesn't take you anywhere near anything you might actually want to see, unless you're interested in seeing the bunghole of the world, AKA Bartlett NH, but the drive itself is immensely fun, if you like that sort of thing. Narrow, windy, twisty, cracked surface tar road that is not plowed in the winter, so you'll have to go in summer to experience it.
