Reiterating (and adding detail to) my reply to your post - there are 4 places you can get coins prior to entering the northern fortress.
1) In the beginning of the game
2) In the royal gardens
3) By the place you found the Yuckyuck leaves
4) By kicking some leaves around/searching around in a clearing in the enchanted forest
Oh, and don't forget what I said about the scroll, it'll come in handy for something else you'll need.
