When we lived in Europe, we took the opportunity to pick up English, German, and French boards -- which are interesting, because the property names are all different (in the English version, St. Charles Place is Pall Mall; Atlantic Avenue is Leicester Square; Boardwalk is Mayfair; and so on), and the monetary denominations are adjusted by a constant factor to compensate for the difference in the respective nation's currency. (It's great playing Monopoly with 50,000 franc bills.) The Chance and Community Chest cards in the German and French versions are a great way to give those rusty foreign language skills a workout.
This is weird. Last weekend, we played Monopoly again (i didnt open the box anymore since my childhood (a whole ten years ago!!!lol)) We played with a game owned by my friend. In her box there was a little book with the history of Monopoly, the names on the board originally, some statistics (longest game, ...) And this monday-morning i read the new posts here, and there is one handling about monopoly! LOL! Quite funny.
Here in Belgium, the biggest street (the one just before start) is called "Brussels, Newstreet" (* translated by jommeke*). And of course, also here every community or whatsoever has its own board (so you dont have to come here to find alternating boards, like mentionned in one reply-post).
Statistics and history i remember from reading? (i know that if i bring this little story up, some of you will jump into this and bring up some links about Monopoly, but i already included one, [:-)])
-There was once a contest of a group of students back in the early days of Monopoly, i think, and their object was to play as long as possible (get an entry in the Guinness Book of Records). After a couple of days of gameplay, they calculated that there was not enough money included in the box to finish their game, so they contacted the founders of Monopoly, and they sent the players immediatly -with a secured transport- more money, so that the game could be finished.
