You'll have to purchase something full of hot air to get the string.
As for the coins... well, the best source of coins would be from getting a job serving drinks. Ironically, in order to do that, you're gonna have to start a fight in the place you need work.
There is one coin outside the city, in an unusual building to the south or north; I always get it wrong and someone (usually knivetsil) corrects me. You'll have to go there anyway to get some much needed backstory.
