The redness comes after the vampiress. To defeat her, you must give a certain item of yours to a canine friend, who will give you another item, which you can in turn use in conjunctions with two more items already in your inventory to create yet another item which you can use to defeat the vampiress.
For the feather, that really comes in later, but you can get it now if you get something, then trade something, then threaten someone, and then jump down something. Hope that helps.
