Well, that was a bug that allowed you to try getting the mail after starting the puzzle but before solving it. You never actually got the mailroom key. Hopefully this bug will be fixed shortly.
You can still solve the X/O puzzle, but you don't need to, since you've skipped past it by the bug. You'll get the mailroom key, but it won't give you the option to use it since you already got the mail.
