First off, post thine inventory. It helps those of us who do not run the site help you out. From your vague description, I assume you squashed the cat and are stuck at the castle past the garden. But that's just a wild guess. Since you haven't met the sorcerer, you must not have explored the forest thoroughly.

Second off, where have you gotten gold coins?

Did you find one in a dead-end in the garden?
Did you find one near the Yuckyuck leaves?
Did you get change from the shopkeeper for a diamond?
Did you find one by examining the area somewhere in the Enchanted Forest?

If any one of these don't ring a bell, there's your answer.
