It's a good start -- makes me think there's something ominous going on. Not sure about the ispronunication of words thing, though (never heard anyone up here say "aboot," for example).
Is this story, when it's finished, supposed to be humourous? Horror? Science fiction? Satire? A mixture of these categories? Whatever it turns out to be, I have the feeling I'd enjoy it.
I don't know if this would be any help, but the following link does seem to tie in nicely, even if Germany isn't a factor -- as it is in your story. Maybe there are some good ideas there, at the least.
