Personally, I think both, particularly The Mummy, are astonishing accomplishments -- hitting exactly the right tone, building exactly the right pulpy atmosphere, and ultimately becoming wonderful entertainments.

Well, I though particularly The Mummy was a bit overrated. And while it wasn't bad per se it definitely didn't take itself seriously and also had a bit of intentional cheesiness. Sort of like a muted Army of Darkness (which works both as a parody and as an action flick).

> You are absolutely right. It's very hard to draw the lines. In some cases, the choice of movie makes the decision. Sorry, you will never see a IABBBBM reader review of "Gone With the Wind" posted except perhaps on an April 1st. But in most cases, as with The Fifth Element, we let it slide if the review is actually quite literate and not hopelessly flawed or irrational.

Hrmph. The 5th Element review upset me because the reviewer also got a ton of important plot points wrong and obviously didn't get the movie. 5th Element is a weird movie and like I said I could see how people would be put off by the style and tone. And I'm not so much faulting you guys for putting up the review as I am the reviewer for writing it.

> My original post *should* have led up to a point I completely forgot to discuss. The majority of the reviews we get for "obviously" terrible movies have been good ones. But with startling regularity, the reviews we get for "Titanic" and "Star Wars: TPM" and "Gone With the Wind" and so forth have consisted of: "This sucks! I can't believe how much money I wasted on this thing! Two hours gone from my life! It sucks! This is the worst movie ever made! It sucks!"

Ahh... the old anti-hype kicking into effect. One thing that bugs me is that too many people have the tendency to say "This is horrible" rather than "This isn't very good" or "I didn't like that". There never seems to be a middle ground. If you come to me and tell me that a movie you saw was one of the all time worst movies ever made, I will probably laugh at you and tell you to watch Manos.
