It opens another door in the ore refinery where they were (I think, my memory's fuzzy) either breeding or at least keeping alive a good number of those beetles. You had the option in there to pretty much ruin their environment and kill the beetles in there. It's not necessary to beat the game, but I found it satisfying.

At least, I think so. If I haven't played a game in a while (and haven't written everything down) I tend to forget these things.
