If you have the sword, try attacking him from different directions and different scenarios. (I don't know about anyone else, but I could NEVER score a hit on his leg.)

If you don't have the sword, there's a series of steps you need to take to get it, and I have no idea which ones you may or may not have done already. (You see, this is why we tell people to post their inventory so we know what to tell them.)
