Actually, that's critical to dealing with the giraffe. When you first enter the valley, before getting the giraffe's attention, go north to the cavern instead of heading west.

(If the giraffe is there as soon as you enter the valley, get away from him and go away from the valley for several moves - 6 or 7 will do it - and come back. He'll eventually get bored and head west again.)

The cavern consists of 6 rooms and two exits - map it out when you first enter. Whenever you bonk into a wall, you can't go that way. When you don't, you've successfully moved to another room. The second exit will dump you out on the other side of the mountains. Try looking for another way up again and you'll be able to go through the caverns from there.

The point of this? You're gonna have to enter and exit the valley a few times from different directions. Ideally, when you head west into the valley, you want that giraffe's attention fixated on the cavern to the north so you can make a break for it.
